Religion stuff from the fortnight 30/7 - 12/8/12

A church in Manchester, the UK, has been selling olive oil and blackcurrant squash as cures for cancer, HIV and diabetes.
Yes, we have that shit in the UK, too -- and it does just as much damage, when believed. This is why we all need to be taught how to do critical thinking, in school.

'The Religio-Industrial Complex v The Innovators, Sean Faircloth @ The Amaz!ng Meeting 2012'
"One study showed that only 29% of money given to Churches directly addresses real-world charitable needs. For basis of comparison, say, the Red Cross figure is approximately 91%"

'Four children beaten to death to rid their soul of the devil'
There is evil in Haiti, but it isn't anthropomorphic - it's caused by stupid beliefs.
"According to neighbors, the sorcerer — who was assisted by his brother — persuaded the victims’ mother that the children were possessed by a demon and said he could rid their soul of the devil.
The witch doctor and his brother beat the children repeatedly, in steps they said were necessary to expel the demon, and the youngsters died from the blows"

This week's interjection from the world of Judaism:
'Blurry vision is a small price to pay for the sin of seeing an immodestly dressed woman'
"This story gives me a headache. Is it real?"

And now some of Islam:
'Children of “muammin” cult rescued from underground dwellings'

Since the announcement of the Higgs Boson-like particle's identification, Indians have been moaning at the lack of mentions of Satyendra Nath Bose, after whom the boson is named - but Pakistanis have not been moaning about Professor Abdus Salam's lack of mentions. Why? Because of Religious hatred:
"After winning the Nobel prize for physics in 1979 with American scientists Steven Weinberg and Sheldon Lee Glashow, he was banned from lecturing at public universities under pressure from right-wing students and religious conservatives."
"Even in 1989, the world's first Muslim woman prime minister, Benazir Bhutto, who herself knew prejudice, refused to meet him, recalls nuclear physicist Pervez Hoodbhoy."

Souvenirs from 'Holy' sites - a way to "softly" indoctrinate self and family:

Losing our Religion? I certainly hope so. I didn't lose 'my' Religion - i knew where it was - in the lies, deceit, amorality, and abuse - and i expunged it.

And this man, in this moment particularly, sums up 'quite a lot' that's wrong with Religion:
'Pat Robertson blames Sikh temple shooting on atheists'
Seriously? No evidence whatsoever - pure superstition. And asserted because of factionalism and atheophobia.
